Window Wall Hanging Help & Tip Guide cont.

Cut the backing fabric and batting approximately 1" larger around than the top. Layer the backing fabric (right side down), the batting and top (right side up). Make sure all layers are smooth. Pin around the inside and outside sashings. Check the back to see that there are no wrinkles.

Thread sewing machine with invisible thread and use a bobbin with regular thread that matches your backing fabric. Stitch in the Ditch around each panel and around the outside sashing. Stitch in the Ditch is when you sew in the "well" of the seam. Use a straight stitch with a long length. I use a 3.5 on my machine.(4.0 is a basting stitch on my machine)

TIP: Use a walking foot if you have one.

After sewing around each panel and the outside window sashing, trim all edges even. Sew a zigzag stitch (med. width & length) around the entire outer edge of hanging to secure all 3 layers at the edges.

TIP: Before trimming edges, pin along the edges. Trim. Sew a zigzag stitch around the edge with your walking foot, if you have one.

Now is the time to decide how you want to display your hanging. You can either make tabs to sew on the top of the hanging to hang it from or make a sleeve for the back from which to hang it. If you make a sleeve, you will do that last.

Here's how to make tabs:

Cut 4 pieces 5" x 7". Fold each in half right sides together and sew using a 1/4" seam. Turn right side out. Center the seam in the back and press each tab. Fold tabs in half, raw edges even.

(NOTE: Tabs are shown flipped up)

Baste tabs in place. Place first and last tabs 1/2" from edge and center other 2 tags in between.

Binding is added next. You can used purchased binding or make your own.

Here's how I make binding:

Cut 2" wide strips and piece together to form a length approximately 90" long. On on end fold under 1/2", press. Fold strip in half (wrong sides together) and press.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beginning in the middle of one side, line up the raw edges of the folded binding with the edge of the hanging. Starting about 3” from the end of the binding, sew it on with a 1/4 inch seam allowance through all three layers.  Stop ¼” from the corner and backstitch.
Fold the binding at a 90 degree angle so that it lines up with the next side of the hanging.
Then fold the binding 180 degrees so that it is ready to sew on the next side. Starting at the edge, backstitch and start the new side. Repeat at each corner.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

About 3" from where you began, cut the end of the binding so that it goes into the folded under edge where you started. Continue sewing to your starting point.

Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch into place. It should just cover the line of machine stitching. As you turn the binding back at each corner, it will form a miter on the front.

It's time to embroider the quilting design into the 4 corner squares of the hanging.

You can either use sticky back or water soluble stabilizer in your hoop. Print out a template of the quilting design and center it in the square. Use pins to secure the hanging to the stabilizer making sure they are out of the way of the needle.

TIP: If you made tabs for your hanging, make sure they are pinned down so they won't get under the needle.

Shown using sticky back in the hoop.

Your hanging is finished!

To make a sleeve for the back to hang your wall hanging from, (if you did not make tabs) cut a piece of fabric that matches your backing fabric 16" x 6".  Turn under 1/4" twice on each short end and stitch down. Fold piece in half, so that it measures approx. 16" x 3". Sew raw edge together. Turn right side out, press. Center this piece on the back of the hanging at the top. Hand stitch in place.
