Window Wall Hanging Help & Tip Guide
ABOUT THE WALL HANGINGS:
| Each wall hanging consists of 4 machine embroidered panels. Each panel has 1 or more appliqués in it. The last thing to sew on each panel is a rectangular running stitch that goes around the entire design. This is a cutting line. When you cut on this line, it forms a 1/4" seam allowance around each panel. Sashing strips are sewn on to connect the panels together. These pieces form the "panes" of the "window". A narrow border is sewn around all the connected panels. This forms the outside of the "window". A wider border is sewn on around this piece. The top is now complete. Layer your backing fabric, batting and top. Stitch in the ditch around the panels. Next, add binding around the wall hanging. Use the quilting design included in the set to quilt the top if desired. You can add tabs to hang the wall hanging from or add a sleeve to the back. |
| All wall hanging sets include complete instructions, photo of the finished hanging and a diagram to help with the assembly. |
SUPPLIES:
| Various fabrics as listed in the instructions of each wall hanging. |
| Steam A Seam or temporary spray adhesive. I use Steam A Seam for the appliqués. Available at JoAnn's |
| Small, sharp, curved scissors |
| Iron or mini Clover Iron (not necessary, but very handy) |
| Tearaway stabilizer ~ I use Stitch-N-Tear, available from JoAnn's or Wal Mart |
| Thin batting ~ I use Warm & Natural
|
1. EMBROIDER THE PANELS:
| First you will embroider the 4 panels that make up the hanging. Complete instructions for embroidering the panels is |
| included with each hanging. |
| Below will show you step by step how
to do an appliqué.
This is an excerpt from the "Spooky Pumpkin Patch" hanging: |
| "Note: For colors 6-8, use thread that matches fabric you're using for the ghost 6.(ghost) This is a running stitch that will show where the ghost will sew. 7.Before sewing out #7, iron Steam-A-Seam or spray temporary adhesive onto back of the piece of fabric that you are using for the ghost. Cut this piece slightly larger than the stitches made in color #6. Place this fabric over the stitches made in #6. Sew out #7. Remove hoop from the machine. DO NOT UNHOOP FABRIC. Carefully cut close to running stitches just made. Place hoop back on machine. 8.Satin stitch outline of ghost" |
| The first step (#6 from the excerpt above) sews a running
stitch outline of where the ghost will sew.
(NOTE: Fabric is in the hoop)

| Before you sew out the next step (#7 from the excerpt), iron
Steam A Seam onto the wrong side of the fabric you're using for the appliqué
or spray temporary adhesive onto the back of the piece. This
piece of appliqué fabric needs to be larger than the running stitch
outline made in the step above. Lay piece wrong side down covering running
stitch outline. Sew this step.
TIP: I use Steam A Seam packaged in sheets for my appliqués. Once ironed onto the back of fabric, it has a slight tackiness. This allows the fabric piece to lay smooth with no puckers. It is also repositionable. It is permanent when ironed down.
(NOTE: Fabric is in the hoop) |

| Now remove hoop from machine. DO NOT UNHOOP YOUR FABRIC.
Carefully trim close to stitches made in above step. Carefully iron down
appliqué if you have used Steam A Seam using the tip of your iron or
the Mini Clover Iron. Put hoop back onto machine.
(NOTE: Fabric is in the hoop) |

| The next step will sew the satin stitch outline.
Your appliqué is finished.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| This panel is finished embroidering. The last thing to sew is a running stitch that goes all around the design. (Shown as black line) | ![]() |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| This photo shows 3 sides have been trimmed off the panel. Cut just
"slightly" inside the cutting line so that you cut it away.
Tip: Use a straight edge ruler and rotary cutter. |

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| Here are all 4 panels embroidered and trimmed.
TIP: Since this is a wall hanging, most of the time I do not remove all of the stabilizer. I do trim it away from the seam allowances (1/4" in from all edges) to reduce bulk and so that the panels lay flat. |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| Next, you will sew the inside window sashings. Cut 1
1/2" strips. Sew panel 1 to panel 2 and panel 3 to panel 4.
USE A 1/4" SEAM WHEN SEWING ALL SASHINGS AND BORDERS ON AND THROUGHOUT ENTIRE HANGING. Press strips as you go. |
|
Then sew the top panel to the bottom panel. |

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| Cut strips 2 1/2" wide for the outside window borders. Sew strips onto each side first then the top and bottom. | ![]() |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| For the outside borders, cut the border strips 3 1/2". (shown as black) Also cut (4) 3 1/2" corner squares. First sew border strips to each side. Cut 2 border pieces to a length of 14". Sew a corner square to each end of the 14" border strips. You will make 2 of these border/corner square strips. Sew on to the top and one to the bottom. Match the seams up when sewing. | ![]() |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| The top of the hanging is now done.
